Screw the Duplicate Content Penalty: Three Easy Ways to Repurpose Content

Duplicate Content Penalty is a MythThe gauntlet’s been thrown on duplicate content. This morning, SiteProNews released the truth, right from the Google’s mouth: the duplicate content penalty is a myth.

Whaaaaaaa?

You heard me. It’s a myth.

After you give that article a read, pop back here and check out 3 handy tools for repurposing content. I briefly covered the subject in my guest post over at Copyblogger last week, but here, I’ll add a bit more detail designed to kick start your Monday in killer content style. Awwyeah.

eZine Articles: If you’re not using eZine Articles to repurpose your existing content, you’re a dink (yeah, I called you a dink). While you may have to slightly reformat your articles to adhere to their self-serving link and keyword density limits, their page rank and command of presence within search engines is, without a doubt, unprecedented in the article distribution market. Handy idea for repurposing content using eZines: take some of your older content and snazz it up. Upload to eZines and adhere to their guidelines. BAM – fresh backlinks to your website or blog.

Tumblr and Posterous: Two powerful tools on the web for content producers and (ahem) anyone paid to get their clients noticed online. These are ideal places for repurposing content. Have a look at each and see how they can enhance your current marketing and promotion strategies. There are subtle nuances in each, yet they are both remarkably easy to use and if you’re always on the run, you can even blog from your phone or via email. N-A-S-T-Y good. Nasty, I say.

Your Blog: Helloooooo…if you’re doing article marketing and you’ve got a corporate website, your blog is ready and waiting as a repurposing tool for your content. But wait – I thought we just used OTHER tools to repurpose BLOG content? Grab a Snickers, kiddo. Look around your world – you product content every day. Brochures, presentations, leave-behinds, white papers, case studies. It’s ALL great fodder for your blog! Take your non-digital content digital and your already digital content to a new level through your blog. I’m not going to share all my nifty tools, but take 10 minutes today and think about what you’ve got and where you can use it. Hear the little voice that calls at you from across the keyboard, “I’m your blog – use me like yesterday’s newspaper.” Wait – you might actually want yesterday’s newspaper. There’s good content in there!

Now that we know there’s no duplicate content penalty (and hey – I even learned something from the SiteProNews article…goes to show ya), start thinking multi-purpose instead of single use. Think in breadcrumbs instead of loaves. Go forth and repurpose. Watch your backlinks multiply. And all was good on a Monday morning.

We were just discussing repurposing our articles and video in our Monday morning marketing meeting. Now I'll have to update my team with this excellent news.

GREAT article! I would also add an increasingly important 4th place to re-purpose your content: MOBILE! You already have the content, your consumers are spending lots of time on their phones–why not customize what you have for how they want to see it – bite sized, easy to navigate, location specific if possible…etc.

Here's an article I wrote about why retailers absolutely need to post their content to a new (integrated) mobile presence: http://bit.ly/bwbG58

Great advice, E. I use all of these tactics – for both myself and my clients, and they work! Aaaayeah!

Thank you for posting this. So simple, yet easy to forget. I just started using Ezine and will encourage my clients to do the same. Thanks!

    Great reminder! Thanks.

Good reminder but feels like it might be more suitable for small to medium size businesses. I am a big fan of Tumblr and Posterous, do you happen to have any case studies of brands that have adopted them in their social media strategy? Thanks ^^

Chevrolet used Posterous to report from the LA Auto Show last year:

And Marketing Nirvana broached the issue of corporate blogging and “is Posterous ready for big-time brands” recently as well.

I don't wanna be a dink and I'm always up for trying a new plugin and reviewing it so I installed Ezines, posted three older articles and am waiting to see what happens with the submissions. The plugin, so far, has worked great – super easy.

Followed you after copyblogger and Im staying! OK just some user feedback – and noone else seems to be experiencing this Dagnabbit! but…ever since I installed ezine plugin my posts will not publish they simply save as draft. I then have to go into the quick edit mode and change the status from 'draft' to 'published' and it suddenly appears published with the timestamp from when I originally hit publish on the article. Uninstalled plugin,. problem went away! But its such a good plugin- what to do what to do?
OH PS: As an Australian, I am often called DINKY DI. But Dink? hahaha, (I just snorted a bit too)

'SUBSCRIBE HERE BITCHES' is the best call to action I have ever seen.
Now you need to have your autoresponder email send out a big 'WHAT EVERRRRRRRRRR' and your cheer'n

Alas, if I *did* autoresponders, I'd totally do that :)

Let the folks over at eZines know about the bug you experienced. Some versions of PHP aren't compatible at present and they're working on fixes. BTW – LOVE the word “dagnabbit” :)
